Types of Junction Boxes

Jun 18,2022 / BY DEVELOPERS
A Junction Box is an enclosure used to house electrical connections. These boxes are important safety devices, keeping people safe from electric shocks. Here are some helpful tips. Buying an electrical junction box is easy once you know what you're looking for. Listed below are some common types: IP-rated, NEMA 4X, Round pan, and octagon. Ensure the type of electrical junction box you buy is the right size and meets the specifications.
IP-rated
Many junction boxes are IP-rated, but why is that important? According to Terry Boswell, WISKA UK's Sales Manager, an IP-rated junction box is one that is dust-tight and protected from water submersion. High-end outdoor-use applications require high-grade IP-rated enclosures to keep wiring and other electronics safe. For example, the COMBI Junction Box series from WISKA is IP-rated 66/67.
An IP-rated junction box is designed to provide protection from the elements. NEMA-rated junction boxes have a numerical rating of between one and thirteen. NEMA ratings are non-progressive, so higher numbers don't necessarily mean better quality. However, the number represents resistance to different environmental hazards. Letter ratings are included, and they indicate a level of additional protection. An IP-rated junction box is designed to protect terminations and connections from dust, water, and oil.
If your installation requires a waterproof junction box, you'll want to choose one with an IPx4 rating. This rating is necessary in some circumstances, such as outdoor use. An IP-rated junction box can withstand multiple directions of water sprays, but it can't withstand pressurized jets of water. Despite the high water-resistance rating, some junction boxes are more sensitive to the elements than others.
Round pan
A round pan junction box is a shallow electrical enclosure typically installed in a wall or ceiling. This type of box is ideal for mounting ceiling fans, small electrical devices, and other lightweight items. However, the shallow depth makes it a poor choice for mounting large or heavy items, such as refrigerators and air conditioners. Round pan junction boxes are usually only rated for three devices, so you'll need to use a larger unit to accommodate the additional weight.
A round pan junction box is ideal for mounting lighting fixtures that are too large for conventional boxes. It is typically shallow enough to accommodate ceiling-mounted light fixtures, while allowing for easy access to other parts of the wiring. A standard round box can also be fastened to a joist to provide additional support. The best way to select a round pan is by comparing the dimensions of the lighting fixture you're mounting. This will ensure that your light fixture is mounted securely.
Octagon
An Octagon Junction Box is the ideal place to hide electrical wiring. They are made of durable pre-galvanized steel, and are strong enough to hold a light fixture. UL listed steel octagon boxes are acceptable for 2-hour fire-rated walls. And, they are fire-resistant! So, you can put as much of your electrical wiring in an Octagon Box as you need, and you won't have to worry about it catching on fire.
An Octagon Junction Box is deeper than a round-pan box. Unlike standard-sized round-pan boxes, octagon boxes are deeper and are designed for wall-mounted lighting as well as ceiling fixtures. And, they cost the same, but they allow for more room for wiring. So, you can use an Octagon Box to conceal all of your electrical wiring without cutting holes in your wall. The Octagon Junction Box is a great option for home and business applications.
